At the opening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday, President Joe Biden spotlighted Vice President Kamala Harris as the future leader of the Democratic Party. Urging Americans to vote for Harris in the upcoming election, Biden emphasized her importance to the party’s vision.
The evening began with heartfelt tributes from Biden’s family. First Lady Jill Biden and their daughter Ashley Biden shared personal anecdotes, painting a picture of a man who has dedicated his life to public service. “There are moments when I fall in love with him all over again,” Jill Biden remarked, drawing applause from the crowd.
Biden, visibly moved, wiped away tears as his daughter introduced him. He then addressed the enthusiastic crowd, who held signs reading, “We (heart) Biden,” with a beaming smile. “I love YOU,” he responded, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.
Rather than delivering a high-profile acceptance speech later in the week, Biden took center stage on the convention’s first night. He urged voters to choose freedom, democracy, and America by electing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. “Are you ready to vote for freedom? Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America?” Biden asked. “Let me ask you, are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?”
Biden also praised his administration’s achievements, highlighting economic growth and strengthened U.S. alliances worldwide. Reflecting on his decision to select Harris as his running mate in 2020, Biden stated, “Selecting Kamala was the very first decision I made when I became our nominee. It’s the best decision I made.”
He condemned the persistent issues of racism and white supremacy in the nation, firmly stating that they have no place in America.
Harris Vows Victory
Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance earlier in the evening, vowing to defeat Republican rival Donald Trump in the upcoming election. “Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear, and let us always remember, when we fight, we win!” she declared to a cheering audience. Harris expressed deep gratitude for Biden’s leadership, acknowledging his lifetime of service to the nation.
Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton also addressed the convention, praising Biden for restoring dignity to the White House. She lauded Harris’s character and vision, predicting that her election would shatter the glass ceiling that Clinton herself once cracked.
Clinton ended with a sharp critique of Trump, noting his legal troubles. “Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial, and when he woke up, he made his own kind of history—the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions,” she quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd.
As the evening closed, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, joined Biden on stage, signaling unity and a shared vision for the future of the Democratic Party.
