The hyperspectral technology company Pixxel wins $476 million contract with NASA via the Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition Program. The deal will extend to November 2028 thereby ranking Pixxel among the largest earth observation firms in the world.

Under this contract, the utilization of hyperspectral imaging, Pixxel will be offering NASA as well as its tripartite government and academic associates the ability to use first class Earth observation data. This data, on the basis of Pixxel’s modern electronics, can collect a lot of materials across hundreds of thin bands of wavelengths. These findings will provide direction on some of the important matters relating to the environment including climate change, agriculture and natural resource management and exploitation. The detailed information is believed to meet the needs of NASA’s Earth science programs, thus helping enhance understanding of the climate change issues.

Thus, Awais Ahmed, Pixxel’s CEO and co-founder, highlighted the importance of the deal for the company and for the whole industry. Ahmed said:” We are indeed honored to be associated with NASA as a contractor for supporting Earth Observation programs and show people how our products could be used as precise tools in the fight against the global problems of the environment.”

Future Satellite Constellation

Pixxel is also on the verge of launching more of its hyperspectral satellites that are in the line called Fireflies. These satellites with 5 meter resolution will provide the best hyperspectral imagery available in the space today. To achieve that goal, the fireflies will be able to collect data across 250 spectral bands while comprising a swath width of 40km each and the capacity to revisit any place in the world in just twenty four hours time. This capability will be useful especially as there will be constant need for monitoring the environment.

Pixxel has been planning for the future and the firm’s plan is to have a constellation of 24 satellites. This one shall enable industries and governments to access essentials information with full real time information. The enhanced and widened network, therefore, should provide valuable information which will enhance natural resources utilization and create higher environmental sustainability.

With this kind of collaboration with NASA, Pixxel remains to stand among the most important and relevant companies in the global market for space and Earth observation services.
