Kamala Harris Delivers Key Speech at DNC

Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where she formally accepted her nomination as the party’s presidential candidate. The California senator delivered an address marked by a strong call for global peace and defense of democracy — setting up a stark contrast with Republican President Donald Trump.

In her speech, Harris framed this election as a critical choice for America’s future. “In this election,” she said, “we are in a battle for the soul of our nation.” She accused Trump of aligning himself with dictators over democratic values, saying: “He said that there were quote some very fine people on both sides … Charlottesville and our president — that’s what we have.”

Harris Slams Trump Policies

Harris criticized Trump’s treatment of the middle class, warning he would impose tariffs that would hike up grocery prices and arguing his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh could threaten abortion rights. She vowed to lead as president “for all Americans” and create an “economy of opportunity.”

But Biden is promising to raise taxes only on those making more than $400,000 per year. He also has proposed banning all price hikes on groceries during the pandemic.

The ban was one among several policy proposals aimed at helping working-class Americans that Harris made Thursday night. Those included cutting taxes for most Americans, expanding access to affordable housing and imposing fines on corporations that pay men higher wages than women.

However, she acknowledged that similar proposals from Biden had encountered resistance from corporations and Congress before.

Nonetheless, as the convention was going on, former Presidents Clinton and Obama reminded everyone that there is more work to be done. Harris’ current surge needs to be reflected in the actual voting numbers because the election can still go either way.
